Why we recommend the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter
We’re always on the lookout for ways to help our landlords stand out—and one of the best new opportunities is the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter. It’s a voluntary scheme that highlights landlords who provide safe, well-managed, and fair homes—and we think it’s well worth considering.
While there’s no obligation to join, being part of the Charter could give you an edge when marketing your property. We’d love to showcase your membership in our advertising, showing potential tenants that you go the extra mile.
Here’s a quick guide to what the Charter is all about, and why we think it could be a great move for you.
What is the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter?
The Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter is a new, city-region-wide initiative led by Mayor Andy Burnham and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. It’s designed to recognise landlords who provide good quality, well-managed, and fairly priced homes across Greater Manchester.
This Charter is entirely voluntary and free to join. It’s open to any landlord who rents out properties in one of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, and Wigan.
The goal? To raise standards and give tenants a better renting experience, while also supporting landlords who are doing things right.
What does it involve?
The Charter sets out seven key areas of good practice, with a total of 21 simple criteria. If you meet these, you can become a full member. If you're working towards them, you can still sign up as a supporter and get help to reach the full standard.
The areas covered include:
Affordability. Keeping rents fair and helping tenants if they fall behind
Inclusivity. Welcoming tenants from all backgrounds and supporting those with additional needs
Security. Respecting tenants' rights to feel safe at home
Responsiveness. Acting quickly and clearly when things go wrong
Support. Being transparent with contracts and signposting help when needed
Management. Having strong processes in place or using a qualified agent (like us!)
Safety & Quality. Ensuring your properties meet health and safety standards and are properly maintained
You don’t have to be perfect to start—just committed to doing the right thing and open to improving over time.
Why should you sign up?
There are a few good reasons to consider it:
It helps you stand out
In a competitive rental market, showing tenants you’re part of the Charter can make your property more appealing.
It builds trust
Tenants are more likely to rent (and stay longer) with a landlord who follows good practices.
It supports you too
You’ll get access to guidance and resources to help you stay on top of your legal and management responsibilities.
We can promote it for you
If you’re a member, we’ll highlight it in our property listings and marketing, giving you a valuable selling point.
Basically, it’s a win-win—you’re doing the right thing, and you’re also giving your property a boost in the eyes of potential renters.
How do you join?
It’s easy! You just need to register your interest on the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter website. If you join before the official launch event on 23 May 2025, you’ll even be featured as one of the first Supporting Landlords.
Whether you're a single-property landlord or managing a whole portfolio, it's a fantastic way to show you're committed to quality and fairness.
Our take
We’re always here to support our landlords—and we genuinely believe this Charter is a step in the right direction for everyone involved in the rental market.
You’re not required to join, but if you do, we’ll be proud to promote your Charter membership whenever your property is advertised. It’s a great way to show tenants that you care, and that your property meets high standards.
