Renters Reform Bill gets its second reading

The Government's Renters Reform Bill will get its long awaited second reading on Monday 23rd October 2023.

There is also a "carry over motion" to allow the bill to make it through into the next parliamentary session, which follows the King's speech on 7th November.

The bill proposes a "fairer" private rented sector, with measures that include:

  • Abolishment of the "no fault" possession notice known as Section 21 evictions.
  • Establishment of a new Ombudsman covering all private landlords to improve dispute resolution.
  • Creation of an Online Portal where landlord's will have to evidence their compliance.
  • Introduction of the Decent Homes Standard, coming across from the social housing sector, with the intention of improving the condition of housing in the private rented sector.
