Michael Gove hints that there may be Government help for the rental sector

Financial assistance for private tenants faced with increasing rents is one of a number of possible Government initiatives "on the table" according to Michael Gove, the new Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Speaking on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuennsberg show, Gove said, “We know people in the private and social rented sectors are facing tough times. We’re looking to help them with targeted support for people who are in difficulties”

Gove made no firm commitment, saying that was a job for the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, but added, “It is the government’s job to do everything it can to help people through difficult times."

He was then questioned about the conditions of some properties in the private rented sector, and on the poor record of rogue landlords being prosecuted. Responding, he reiterated past commitments that the government would enforce a Decent Homes Standard via the Renters Reform Bill - although no timings or deadlines were set.

This may well mean that the Autumn Statement due on November 17 may contain financial measures to help private renters, at a time when many are struggling.
