Reports are emerging that the controversial plan to stop landlords evicting tenants under Section 21 laws may be abandoned by the new administration.

Government officials from the DLUHC have refused to comment on leaked documents after a report appeared in The Times newspaper which claimed that the highly controversial decision to outlaw the notices would be reversed by the new housing secretary, Simon Clarke.

The proposal to stop landlords evicting tenants under Section 21 of the Housing Act 1988 was included in the recent Renters Reform White Paper announced by former housing secretary, Michael Gove.

The report in The Times says that the Section 21 laws are not considered a priority, and quotes a Government source suggesting the plans would be delayed or even scrapped entirely, despite it being a Tory manifesto commitment.

A DLUHC spokesperson said, “Everyone deserves to live in a safe and secure home. A fair deal for renters remains a priority and we are carefully considering our next steps for the rental market.”
